A doctor who specialises in the study of diseases and the changes in the body caused by disease, examining tissue specimens from patients and reporting on the presence or absence of disease in them.

A physician who specializes in studying the nature, cause, development, and effects of disease, both in general and in specific cases, often working in a laboratory, hospital, medical school, or research institute. Apart from their own research, pathologists are often consultants to other physicians, using their expert knowledge of how disease changes the tissues and fluids of the body to help in diagnosing disorders, as in analyzing material from specimen tests. Some specialize in doing autopsies, attempting to learn for the future from detailed analysis of the effects of a disease in someone who has died.
