Persistence

The tendency of a compound (e.g., an insecticide) to resist degradation by biological means (e.g.. metabolism by microorganisms) after that compound has been introduced into the environment (e.g., sprayed onto a field) or by physical means (e.g., degradation caused by exposure to sunlight, moisture, etc.).

The duration that a virus persists in a vector following acquisition from an infected plant is a critical aspect used to establish three categories associated with other transmission characteristics. These categories, non-persistent, semipersistent, and persistent, describe whether viruses are retained by feeding vectors for hours, days, or weeks, respectively.

The transient preservation or retention of a signal or image for a brief period, following the removal of the stimulus.
