A drug in soluble material which is pushed into the vagina and absorbed into the blood there.

A contraceptive device worn inside the vagina to prevent spermatozoa entering.

A device like a ring, which is put into the vagina as treatment for prolapse of the uterus.

Plastic or metal device, usually ring- shaped, inserted into the vagina to correct the position of the uterus or to provide support in cases of uterine prolapse; it is usually used in cases where surgery to correct the problem is unwise (e.g., because of the advanced age or general poor health of the woman).

A prosthesis placed in the vagina to tighten and support the pelvic floor. The purpose is usually to hold a prolapsed (dropped) uterus in place. Pessaries are used less often now that surgery for uterine prolapse is an effective treatment.

A plastic or metal instrument, often ring-shaped, that fits into the vagina and keeps the womb in position: used to treat prolapse.

A device inserted into the vagina to function as a supportive structure for the uterus. A pessary may be inserted to treat symptomatic uterine displacements. After manually repositioning the uterus, the physician inserts the appropriatesize device; a woman should not feel a well-fitted pessary. Pessaries should be removed and cleaned frequently; however, this requires manual dexterity and is difficult for elderly patients. Use of an antibacterial cream or gel will help decrease odor. Unless discomfort arises, the device is removed about 6 weeks later. If relief and anteversion occur, no further treatment is necessary. If not, the pessary is reinserted for another 6 weeks.

An apparatus implanted into the vaginal canal to provide support for organs that have experienced drooping.

A pessary is a device designed to be inserted into the vagina. While some pessaries are used to reposition the uterus, others serve as contraceptive tools. The term “pessary” can also describe a solid medication dose that is placed inside the vagina. Once inserted, this medication dissolves and releases the drug.

An instrument inserted into the vagina to support the uterus or to prevent conception, typically made of rubber. It can also refer to a bullet-shaped suppository with chemicals used to treat vaginal infections.
