Physostigmine

An extract of the dried leaves of the vine that produces Calabar bean, which is toxic but may be used in the treatment of glaucoma and to counter the effects of anticholinergic drugs on the central nervous system.


Parasympathomimetic drug used in the treatment of tetanus and myasthenia gravis. Adverse effects include bronchospasm, digestive upsets, and excess salivation.


A parasympathomimetic drug used mainly to constrict the pupil of the eye and to reduce pressure inside the eye in glaucoma. It is administered by injection, in eye-drops, or in an ointment; side-effects include digestive upsets and salivation.


Also known as eserine. An alkaloid obtained from Calabar bean, the seed of Physostigma venenosum, a climbing plant of West Africa.
