Pit

A small hollow or depression.

Hardened covering enclosing seed or seeds in a fruit, as in a peach.

A hollow or depression, such as any of the depressions on the surface of an embryo marking the site of future organs.

The pit, or hard seed, of a fruit such as a peach or cherry is a well-known characteristic of these fruits. In addition to being a part of the fruit itself, the term “pit” can also refer to the act of removing this hard seed from the fruit. Whether done manually or using specialized tools, removing the pit is an essential step in preparing many fruit-based recipes. Despite its tough exterior, the pit is an important component of the fruit, providing essential nutrients and contributing to its unique flavor profile.
