Poisoning

A condition or physical state produced by the ingestion, injection or inhalation of, or exposure to a deleterious agent.

A condition in which a person is made ill or is killed by a poisonous substance.

Illness produced by the introduction of a toxic substance into the body.

The effect of one or more harmful substances on the body.

Toxins can be ingested, inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or injected beneath the skin (as in the case of an insect bite). They can also originate internally, such as when bacteria generate endotoxins, or when metabolic disorders create toxic substances or enable their buildup. Poisoning can be acute when a significant amount of poison enters the body rapidly, or chronic when poison accumulates gradually and isn’t swiftly eliminated from the body.

Accidental poisoning is most frequently observed in young children. Adults can be poisoned due to errors in medication dosage, excessive intake of vitamins or mineral supplements, contact with toxic substances in occupational settings, or through substance abuse. Poisoning might also be a deliberate act with the intention of self-harm or suicide.

Antidotes might be accessible to neutralize the impact of the poison.
