Polioencephalitis

A type of viral encephalitis, an inflammation of the grey matter in the brain caused by the same virus as poliomyelitis.


A virus infection of the brain, causing particular damage to the gray matter of the cerebral hemispheres and the brainstem. The infection is usually transmitted to man by the bite of a mosquito or tick. Some forms of this illness are endemic in a particular locality (e.g. Japanese (B) encephalitis); others have occurred as epidemics, e.g. encephalitis lethargica.


A condition characterized by inflammatory lesions of the gray matter of the brain.


Swelling of the brain’s grey matter.
