Prairie oyster

Whereas the ancient Aztecs referred to the avocado as ahuacatl, meaning testicle, many North Americans call a cooked calf’s testicle an oyster, more specifically a prairie oyster. For the Aztecs the connection between avocado and testicle was probably based upon shape, although the Aztecs themselves might claim that size was another factor; for us, the oyster’s reputation as an aphrodisiac is probably what provides the seminal link to that bovine, ellipsoid organ. This testicular sense of prairie oyster emerged around 1941, but the term had also been used since the late nineteenth century as the name for a cocktail made with a raw egg.


A virgin beverage, recommended as a remedy for the aftereffects of excessive drinking, consisting of an unscathed egg yolk, along with a blend of sundry other constituents, such as tomato juice and Worcestershire sauce.


A beverage known to provide solace to the ailing and offer respite to those burdened with a hangover is none other than the intriguing concoction made from a raw egg in its unbroken state. This peculiar elixir bears a striking resemblance, both in appearance and consistency, to an oyster. Notably, this unique libation is also believed to possess the power to alleviate hiccups, rendering it a widely regarded remedy.
