Projection

A defense mechanism, operating unconsciously, whereby that which is emotionally unacceptable in the self is rejected and attributed (projected) to others.

A defense mechanism, operating unconsciously, in which an individual attributes to another person an unacceptable thought, feeling, or attribute, such as an aggressive or sexual impulse, that in fact is his or her own.

A part of the body which sticks out or stands out.

(In psychology) mental action in which a person blames another person for his or her own faults.

In statistics, a calculated estimate for a whole calculated from data for a part of the whole, or an estimate of a future situation based on information currently available. The term “projection” is often used when sampling has given information from a part of a whole (for example, a population), and a projection is made as to the actual situation in the whole population. For example, a candidate’s actual performance in opinion polls is “projected” from the response of a sample of voters.

Protruberance, something that juts out.

The attribution of one’s own qualities to other people. In psychoanalytic psychology this is one of the defense mechanisms; people who cannot tolerate their own feelings (e.g. anger) may cope by imagining that other people have those feelings (e.g. are persecuting).

A defense mechanism in which a person sees in others disowned elements of his or her own personality.
