Prokaryote

Unicellular organism having a less complex structure than a eukaryote; it’s characterized by the absence of a nucleus and by having the genetic material in the form of simple filaments of DNA.


Single-cell organisms.


Organism containing cells without nuclei, the nuclear material being scattered throughout the cell. Bacteria, blue-green algae, and certain other microorganisms are prokaryotes.


Hormone produced in and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland that stimulates growth and development of mammary glands in females and the production of milk after delivery; also called lactogenic hormone; luteotropin.


An organism of the kingdom Monera with a single, circular chromosome, without a nuclear membrane, or membrane-bound organelles (i.e. , mitochondria and lysosomes). Included in this classification are bacteria and cyanobacteria (formerly the blue-green algae).
