Prophase

The first phase of cell division, in which the chromosomes become visible, the nucleus starts to lose its identity, the spindle appears, and the centrioles migrate toward opposite poles.

An early stage in meiosis during which the chromosomes are dispersed throughout the nucleus and are doubled longitudinally.

The first stage of mitosis when the chromosomes are visible as long thin double threads.

First of the four major phases of nuclear division (mitosis and meiosis) in which the nuclear membrane disappears and the chromosomes become recognizable individually and start to move toward the midplane of the developing spindle.

The first stage of mitosis and of each division of meiosis, in which the chromosomes become visible under the microscope. The first prophase of meiosis takes place in five stages.
