Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)

A stretching technique in which an individual contracts the same muscle that he wants to stretch.


A stretching technique in which the muscle to be stretched is first contracted maximally. The muscle is then relaxed, and either is actively stretched by contraction of the opposing muscle or is passively stretched.


An approach to therapeutic exercise directed at relaxing muscles, increasing joint range of motion, and regaining function by using spiral diagonal patterns of movement. The principles and techniques were created and refined in the 1940s by Dr. Herman Rabat and two physical therapists, Maggie Knott and Dorothy Voss. PNF uses a developmental sequence of mobility, stability, controlled mobility, and skill; it emphasizes precision in patient position, manual contacts, verbal cueing, and timing.


A type of flexibility exercise in which you perform a static stretch, contract the muscle to produce fatigue, and then relax while a partner stretches your limb.
