Prostatism

A disorder of the prostate gland, especially enlargement that blocks or inhibits urine flow.

The condition induced by benign enlargement of the prostate gland.

Any condition of the prostate gland that interferes with the flow of urine from the bladder. The condition is characterized by frequent uncomfortable urination and nocturia. Retention of urine may occur with development of uremia. Causes include benign hypertrophy, carcinoma, prostatitis, and nodular hyperplasia.

Symptoms stemming from an enlarged prostate gland, which causes constriction and deformation of the urethra, thereby hindering urine flow from the bladder, are known as prostatism. Common signs often include frequent urination, nocturnal urination, delayed onset of urination, dribbling following urination, and loss of bladder control.
