Protein kinases

A family of enzymes that catalyze the conversion of ATP and a protein to ADP and a phosphoprotein.

Enzymes capable of phosphorylating (covalently bonding a phosphate group to) certain amino acid residues in specific proteins.

Enzymes that phosphorylate other proteins; important are protein kinase A and protein kinase C.

There are four major kinases (A, C, CΕ, and G) that catalyze the phosphorylation of specific proteins within the membrane-to-cytosol signaling systems.

An enzyme that activates or inactivates cell proteins or enzymes by adding a phosphate moiety, thereby changing cell functions.
