Proton pump

Integral membrane proteins that transport protons across a membrane against a concentration gradient. This transport is driven by hydrolysis of ATP by H(+)-transporting ATP synthase.

An enzyme system within the gastric mucosa that secretes gastric acids.

A key enzyme system in the parietal cells of the mucosal lining of the stomach: hydrogen ions are produced which acidify the stomach’s secretions and convert pepsinogen to pepsin, an active participant in the digestion of food.

An enzyme located in the parietal cell of the stomach that excretes hydrogen ions in exchange for potassium ions. The formal name of the protein pump is hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphate (H+/K+ATPase).
