A condition in which symptoms such as stomach cramps, nausea and bloating indicate a blockage in the intestines although no blockage exists.
Dilation or enlargement of the colon that mimics a mechanical obstruction in the absence of an actual blockage. This condition typically develops after abdominal surgery or in people who are severely ill. Most people with pseudo-obstruction are successfully treated with bed rest, insertion of a nasogastric tube for suction, and administration of intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration and shock. If the enlargement continues, perforation (a hole or erosion) of the intestine is a risk. Sometimes the pseudo-obstruction can be relieved by colonoscopy. Surgery is also sometimes required.
