Psychoneurosis

Any of a group of mental disorders in which a person has a faulty response to the stresses of life.

An obsolete term used by Sigmund Freud to describe emotional disorders in which unconscious emotional conflicts originating in childhood overwhelm the individual’s mechanisms for defending the ego against them. The resulting anxiety expresses itself as abnormal fear (phobia), obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, depression, hysteria, or other illnesses.

A neurosis that is manifest in psychological rather than organic symptoms.
