Abnormal growths in the salivary glands located in the neck or in the parotid glands located above the sides of the jaw. Most salivary gland tumors grow slowly and are benign. Swelling of the affected gland is usually the only symptom, although there may be slight pain. Salivary gland tumors are diagnosed through imaging studies, such as ultrasound and CT (computed tomography) scanning. A sample of tissue is taken to confirm the diagnosis. In most cases, tumors are surgically removed. Although surgery carries a small risk of damage to the nerves that control facial movements, the damage can usually be surgically repaired. If there is a malignant tumor, doctors recommend radiation therapy following removal of the tumor.
