Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR)

The specialized muscle cell organelle that stores and releases calcium.

A network in the cytoplasm of striated muscle fibres.

Network of tubules and sacs that function in muscle contraction and relaxation.

An arrangement of membranous vesicles and tubules found in the cytoplasm of striated muscle fibers. The sarcoplasmic reticulum plays an important role in the transmission of nervous excitation to the contractile parts of the fibers.

The endoplasmic reticulum of striated muscle cells, surrounding the sarcomeres. In response to an action potential, it releases calcium ions to induce contraction, then reabsorbs calcium ions to induce relaxation.

Embedded within the myocytes, there exists an intricate network of minuscule conduits, facilitating the rhythmic interplay of muscle contraction and relaxation. This dynamic orchestration is achieved through the sequential liberation and sequestration of calcium ions.
