Sebaceous gland

A small gland in the skin that secretes oil, which helps to keep the skin soft.

A gland in the skin which secretes sebum at the base of each hair follicle.

Any of numerous sebum-secreting organs in the dermis throughout the body (except the palms and soles), especially abundant on the scalp, face, nose, mouth, and ears. In most cases the sebum is secreted into hair follicles but in some places (e.g., the labia minora, ups) it is secreted onto the surface. The sebum oils the hair and skin and helps to retain body heat and prevent sweat evaporation.

Structures that secrete sebum to the skin surface.

Oil-producing glands in the skin. The sebaceous glands secrete sebum, the fatty acid that lubricates the skin. In teenagers, hormonal changes stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and acne. As a person grows older, the sebaceous glands become less active, and the skin becomes drier.

Any simple or branched gland in the ‘skin that secretes an oily substance, sebum. They open into hair follicles and their secretion is produced by the disintegration of their cells. Some parts of the skin have many sebaceous glands, others few. Activity varies with age: the glands are most active at puberty.

The minute glands situated alongside hairs and opening into the follicles of the latter a short distance below the point at which the hairs emerge on the surface. These glands secrete an oily material, and are especially large upon the nose, where their openings form pits that are easily visible. In the mouth the glands open directly on the mucosal surface.

An oil-secreting gland of the skin. The glands are simple or branched alveolar glands, most of which open into hair follicles. They are holocrine glands; their secretion, known as sebum, arises from the disintegration of cells filling the alveoli. Some aberrant glands are found in the cheeks or lips of the oral cavity, well separated from hair follicles.

Gland in the skin that adds oil to the skin and hair shaft to keep skin and hair looking smooth and healthy.

Glands connected to hair follicles. Sebum is the fatty or oily secretion of the sebaceous glands.

A type of gland found in the dermis that produces oil.
