Secondary infection

An infection occurring in someone already suffering from an infection or from a wound that becomes secondarily infected after the wound was inflicted.


An infection which affects a person while he or she is weakened through having another infection.


A new infection in a person who already has an infection.


An infection made possible by a primary infection that lowers the host’s resistance (e.g., bacterial pneumonia following influenza).


Infertility in which one or more pregnancies have occurred before the present condition of infertility.


The occurrence of illness resulting from the establishment of newly introduced bacteria, viruses, or fungi following an initial infection.


A secondary infection occurs as a consequence or subsequent event to a pre-existing infection. For instance, a bacterial respiratory infection might develop after a viral infection has already taken place.
