Strapping

Wide strong bandages or adhesive plaster used to bandage a large part of the body.

A preliminary treatment for heel pain that has been diagnosed as caused by a mechanical problem in the foot. Strapping, or wrapping adhesive tape to exert pressure and hold the heel in place, for example, is considered an effective approach to testing the potential of orthotics therapy (the use of custom-made shoe inserts) for individual cases of foot pain. Generally, if strapping reduces foot pain significantly within the first 24 to 72 hours, an orthotic device is prescribed for ongoing treatment. Joints can also be strapped.

The application of strips of adhesive plaster, one overlapping the other, so as to cover and exert pressure on an area of the body. This treatment is used in cases of injury or disease when it is desired to keep a part at rest: for example, strapping may be applied to the chest in cases of fracture of the ribs. Also, it is often used to prevent the movement of joints which are sprained or otherwise injured.

The act of affixing adhesive tape onto a specific body area to apply pressure, subsequently lessening discomfort and swelling, or to provide reinforcement for a weakened region.
