Streptolysin

A toxin produced by streptococci in rheumatic fever, which acts to destroy red blood cells.

Two exotoxic substances produced by some streptococci (particularly Group A). Streptolysin ‘O’ is oxygen-labile and produced in serum-free broth; streptolysin ‘S’ is oxygen- insensitive, produced only in serum broth; it produces beta haemolysis on blood agar and activates the soluble haemolysin test (which see).
