Unguent

An archaic term for ointment or salve. Herbal unguents may be made with 8 parts heated lanolin, beeswax and olive oil, Vaseline, lard or other fatty medium, into which is mixed 2 parts finely powdered herbs. Another old method is to boil herbs in water until a strong extract is formed, strain it, then add it to warm (not hot) olive oil. Bring it to a boil, and simmer until the water has completely evaporated, leaving only the oil. Now add enough beeswax and rosin to solidify the ointment, stirring continuously.

A smooth oily medicinal substance which can be spread on the skin to soothe irritations.
