A layer of tissue completely surrounding the developing fruit body, pieces of it sometimes remaining on the cap as warts or patches when the fruit body expands, also surrounding the base of the stem as a volva, often on both the cap and stem as differently colored and differently textured tissues when compared to the skin of the cap and stem.
