Urokinase

A drug that dissolves blood clots or prevents them from forming.

Enzyme produced in the kidney that activates fibrinolysis. A urokinase preparation is used in the treatment of pulmonary embolism and some myocardial infarctions to dissolve blood clots.


Urokinase is an enzyme obtained from urine which dissolves blood clots. It is used thrombolysis in the eye, in arteriovenous shunts and deep-vein thrombosis. It has the advantage over other fibrinolytic drugs of not causing immunological reactions.
