Vaginal delivery

The birth of a baby through the mother’s vagina, without surgical intervention.

The passage of a baby through the vagina, or birth canal, and out of the mother’s body. Vaginal delivery is the most common type of birth. When a vaginal delivery is not considered safe or possible, a cesarean section, in which the baby is removed through an abdominal incision, is performed. In a vaginal delivery, involuntary uterine contractions push the baby out of the uterus. As the baby’s head enters the vagina, deliberate pushing by the mother can help deliver the baby. Most babies are delivered headfirst.
