Vaginal discharge

The flow of liquid from the vagina.

Discharge made up mostly of secretions from cervical glands from the vagina. A clear or whitish dis¬ charge is normal, varying in amount and consistency mm woman to woman and in each woman during different phases of the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. Inflammation of the vagina and cervix often causes the discharge to change in amount, color, and odor.

The release of fluids from the cervical glands within the vagina is referred to as vaginal discharge. Under normal circumstances, this discharge appears clear or white in color.

The release of fluids from the vagina is a natural process. Normal mucous secretion from the vaginal walls and cervix varies among women and can also change at different points in the menstrual cycle. Oral contraceptives may either amplify or reduce this discharge. During pregnancy, such secretions are generally more abundant. Additionally, sexual arousal can lead to an increase in vaginal discharge.

Unusual discharge could be a sign of an issue if it is overly abundant, has a foul odor, is yellow or green, or leads to itchiness. This kind of abnormal discharge may occur alongside vaginitis, an inflammation of the vagina. Vaginitis could be caused by infections like thrush (candidiasis) or trichomoniasis, or it could stem from the presence of a foreign object, like a forgotten tampon, inside the vagina.
