Valvular disease of the heart

An inflammation of the membrane which lines the valves of the heart.

Disorder of heart valves caused by stenosis and obstructed blood flow or degeneration and blood regurgitation. Major types of valvular heart disease include aortic stenosis and mitral valve stenosis.

Any dysfunction or abnormality affecting one or more of the valves that control blood flow into, out of, arid inside the heart. Several kinds of problems can affect the valves. Incompetence, or regurgitation, occurs when a valve leaks. Narrowing or partial blockage of a valve is called valvular stenosis. Atresia is a serious condition in which a valve fails to develop properly and is closed at birth; it can affect any of the valves. Prolapse refers to abnormal bulging of the valve when the heart contracts.
