Vegetarian

A person who does not consume meats, poultry or fish, but may eat butter, milk and eggs.

A person who eats only foods from plant sources.

Someone who does not eat meat, but eats mainly vegetables and fruit and sometimes dairy produce, eggs or fish.

A vegetarian is an individual whose diet is based solely or primarily on plant foods. Several levels of vegetarianism exist, but the most typical are vegans, lactovegeterians, ovovegetarians, and lactoovovegeterians. A vegan is a vegetarian who avoids all animal foods including meats, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy foods. A lactovegetarian will consume dairy foods in addition to plant foods, but will not consume meats, fish, poultry, or eggs. An ovovegetarian will consume eggs in addition to plant foods, but will not consume meats, fish, poultry, or dairy foods. A lactoovovegetarian will consume both dairy foods and eggs in addition to plant foods.

A type of diet that excludes meat, often poultry and fish, and sometimes also eggs and dairy products. Many peoples of the world follow a largely vegetarian diet, many because of personal poverty and limited regional food resources and some because of religious or philosophical conviction. In the West, some people have also adopted a vegetarian approach to nutrition in response to concern about misuse of the world’s resources and because of a desire to live a more natural, healthy existence.

Person who restricts his/her diet to foods of vegetable origin, including fruits, grains, and nuts.

A person who does not eat animal flesh or, in some instances, any animal byproducts. Different approaches result in individual variation in whether fish, eggs, and/or dairy foods are accepted dietary components. Vegetarians must carefully plan their meals to ensure that they consume an adequately nutritive diet.

Individual whose diet consists of plant products, including grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Some vegetarians also consume dairy products and eggs.
