Ventriculostomy

A surgical operation to pass a hollow needle into a ventricle of the brain so as to reduce pressure, take a sample of fluid or enlarge the ventricular opening to prevent the need for a shunt.

An operation to introduce a hollow needle (canula) into one of the lateral ventricles (cavities) of the brain. This may be done to relieve raised intracranial pressure, to obtain cerebrospinal fluid from the ventricle for examination, or to introduce antibiotics or contrast material for X-ray examination.

Plastic surgery to establish communication between the floor of the third ventricle of the brain and the cisterna interpeduncularis. This is done to treat hydrocephalus.

A surgical procedure employed to alleviate hydrocephalus or elevated intracranial pressure by diverting the flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the brain.

A medical procedure involving the creation of a temporary opening into one of the brain’s ventricles.
