Vestigial

As a remnant, a very small version of an organ or organ part, appearing not to serve its original function.


A small or imperfectly developed bodily part or organ that remains from one more fully developed in an earlier stage of the person, or in a past generation, or in closely related forms.


Existing in a rudimentary form.


Existing in a rudimentary form; pert, to a relatively useless organ that had a function in an earlier stage or a more primitive form of life, as the vermiform appendix in humans.


Existing only in a rudimentary form. The term is applied to organs whose structure and function have diminished during the course of evolution until only a rudimentary structure exists.


An adjective referring to an organ which exists in a rudimentary form and whose function and structure have declined during the course of evolution. An example is the appendix.
