Vocal fremitus

A vibration of the chest when a person speaks or coughs.

Palpable vibration in the chest wall produced by voice sounds due to consolidates or congestion.

Vibrations of the voice transmitted to the ear during auscultation of the chest of a person speaking. In determining vocal fremitus, the following precautions should be observed: Symmetric parts of the chest are compared. The same pressure is applied to the stethoscope on each side. Fremitus is decreased in pleural effusions (air, pus, blood, serum, or lymph), emphysema, pulmonary collapse from an obstructed bronchus, pulmonary edema, and cancers of the lung.
