Volunteers in Medicine Clinic

A free, nonprofit, outpatient, multispecialty, health clinic in Hilton Head Island, SC, which is staffed by approximately 100 retired volunteer physicians, nurses, dentists and over 200 lay volunteers. They have unlimited malpractice insurance, with a 21-year “tail” through the Joint Underwriters of SC. VIM Clinic engineered a bill through the SC General Assembly creating a “Special Volunteer License” for the practice of medicine for retired physicians who work in such clinics, with certain stipulations, including the restriction of their practice to volunteer services. The mission is to understand and serve the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved who live or work on the Island. Service in provided in a new 7,000 square foot facility which was built without the involvement of federal, state, or local government funds. Nearly 500 towns around the nation have requested help in replicating such a clinic. Hilton Head may be the only town which can claim that every person who lives or works in the town has an easy access to high quality health care.
