Wharton’s jelly

A jelly-like tissue in the umbilical cord.


The mesoderm tissue of the umbilical cord, which becomes converted to a loose jellylike mesenchyme surrounding the umbilical blood vessels.


The gelatinous intercellular material of the umbilical cord; it consists of collagen, mucin, and hyaluronic acid. It is rich in hyaluronic acid, and in primitive stem cells.
