A rapidly progressing cancer of the blood-forming tissue (bone marrow).Cancer of the blood found chiefly in children responds more readily to treatment than chronic leukemia Treatment consists of chemotherapy and radiation therapy Death usually results from infections or hemorrhage.This variety occurs most frequently in children up to the age of five years, though it can occur in the young adult. The onset is abrupt with the rapid development of anemia, weakness, loss of weight, sore throat, headache, and pains in the bones. The temperature becomes high and blood spots show on mucous membrane and skin surfaces. Hemorrhages occur in various parts of the body and some are severe enough to kill. The average duration of life is about six months, but some cases assume more chronic form and live for about a year. The extreme pallor and enlargement of the lymph glands, especially those of the neck, are the first signs to attract attention. The spleen may be small or greatly enlarged and the liver may be enlarged as well. The lungs may show bronchitis or patches of pneumonia or pleurisy, and inflammation of the heart may set in. Treatment consists of blood transfusions, hormone therapy with cortisone, and the administration of drugs which tend to slow up the progress of the disease.
</oembed>
