A sudden, potentially fatal condition that occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce and release a sufficient amount of cortisol; also known as adrenal crisis, addisonian crisis, or acute adrenal insufficiency. Cortisol is a hormone that enables the body to use nutrients, cope with stress, and regulate the immune system. Symptoms include headache, profound weakness, fatigue, nausea, decreased blood pressure, dehydration, and high fever. Adrenal failure can be diagnosed by the ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) stimulation test, other blood tests, and urine analysis.Insufficient production of hormones by the adrenal cortex, which is the outer part of the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys, can give rise to adrenal failure. This condition can manifest as either acute, characterized by sudden onset, or chronic, characterized by gradual onset. Adrenal failure may occur due to a disorder affecting the adrenal glands, known as Addison's disease, or due to decreased stimulation of the adrenal cortex by ACTH, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland.
</oembed>
