Alcoholic liver disease progresses through three stages of rising severity; a fatty liver (in which fat accumulates inside liver cells), alcoholic hepatitis (inflammation of the liver due to excessive alcohol use), and finally cirrhosis (a severe liver disease in which healthy cells are destroyed and re¬ placed by scar tissue). Eventually, liver cancer and liver failure may result. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has symptoms similar to those of alcoholic liver disease, but is not due to alcohol.Harm inflicted upon the liver due to excessive alcohol consumption. The presence of alcohol-related liver disease amplifies the likelihood of liver cancer emergence.The duration of substantial alcohol consumption correlates with the escalating intensity of harm.
