Inflammation of one or more of the synovial joints between the posterior arches of the vertebrae (apophyseal joints). This may occur in rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis and causes pain. It contributes to partial dislocation (subluxation) of the vertebrae in arthritis and to rigidity of the spine (due to fusion of the joints) in ankylosing spondylitis.
