An atrophy or shrinking away of the soft tissue just under the membrane lining the nose, producing a thick crust of dried material that may eventually decompose and cause a foul odor. The condition can impair the sense of smell and cause nosebleeds. Atrophic rhinitis may result from a lack of activity of the mucous glands in the mucous membrane of the nose or from extensive nasal surgery. It may also be caused by a thinning of the membrane or by a structural abnormality, such as excessively large nasal chambers. It may be caused or aggravated by overuse of over-the counter nasal decongestant sprays. An otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist) can diagnose the condition. Treatment is not always effective but may involve saline irrigation (a procedure in which the doctor flushes a salt water solution through the nasal cavities) and physical removal of any crusts. The use of a vaporizer in the home and workplace may help relieve discomfort.Chronic inflammation with marked atrophy of the mucous membrane and disturbance in the sense of smell; usually accompanied by ozena. The throat is dry and usually contains crusts. A husky voice or hoarseness is common.
</oembed>
