The structure begins as the nuclear self made up of the grandiose self and the idealized parental imago. In successful development, the grandiose self is transformed into self-assertive ambitions at one pole of the bipolar self. At the other pole are the internalized values and ideals that have grown out of the idealized parental imago. Between the two poles are the person’s innate talents and skills.
