An odorless white powder that is very slightly soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. Aqueous and nonaqueous suspensions of calcium hydroxide are often employed as cavity liners to protect the dental pulp from the irritant action of restorative materials; also used in pulp capping, pulpotomy, and apexification procedures.A white powder used as an astringent applied to the skin and mucous membranes and in dentistry as cavity liner or a pulp-capping material under a layer of zinc phosphate. It induces tertiary dentin formation for bridging or root closure, but may be related to a chronic pulpitis and pulp necrosis after pulp capping.
</oembed>
