Any noncriminal legal action, such as cases in which two parties disagree over rights. Most cases in juvenile court, family court, or domestic relations court are civil proceedings and (unlike criminal court) do not involve the right to a jury trial. Rules about what kinds of evidence are admissible are also much looser than in criminal court.
