Use of creative arts to restore, maintain, or improve an individual's physical, mental, emotional, or social functioning. Music therapy, for example, is defined by the National Association for Music Therapy as "the use of music in the accomplishment of therapeutic aims: the restoration, maintenance, and improvement of mental and physical health. It is the systematic application of music, as directed by the music therapist in a therapeutic environment, to bring about desirable changes in behavior. Such changes enable the individual undergoing therapy to experience a greater understanding of himself and the world around him, thereby achieving a more appropriate adjustment of society. As a member of the therapeutic team the professional music therapist participates in the analysis of individual problems and in the projection of general treatment aims before planning and carrying out specific music activities. Periodic evaluations are made to determine the effectiveness of the procedures employed."
</oembed>
