People being prosecuted in criminal court are judged innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt; they have the right to a jury trial, and strict rules apply about what evidence is admissible. Except in special cases, most juveniles charged with crimes come before a civil court, such as a juvenile court or family court, and are subject to less severe penalties. If found guilty, such minors would in strict legal terms be labeled juvenile delinquents rather than criminals.
