Periodontal status of adjacent teeth may also limit the transport rate. In general, a rate of 0.4 mm per day is sufficient to allow the soft tissue to respond while avoiding premature consolidation (i.e., fusion) across the vertical osteotomy components prior to completion of the transport process. If the distraction rate is too slow, the risk for premature consolidation is increased.</description></oembed>
