In education, a student who leaves school before graduation.A student who has stopped attending school before graduating or completing a given course of study, whether under compulsory school age or over. Considerable attention, effort, and analysis have gone into understanding why students drop out and how to keep them from doing so. Some schools have special programs to try to maintain students identified as potential dropouts or to bring back to school some who have already left. Dropouts who later wish to continue their schooling can study, on their own or in groups, to take a series of Tests of General Educational Development; if they pass, they are awarded a certificate of high school equivalency, commonly called a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).An individual who matriculates in, but does not complete a course of study sponsored by an academic institution.
</oembed>
