A tension-discharging phenomenon such as head banging, body rocking, thumb sucking, nail biting, hair pulling, tics, or teeth grinding, usually beginning in childhood. The habit’s importance depends upon its etiology and persistence. Almost all children will demonstrate one or more of these disorders during their development, but if it does not interfere with function it should be of no concern.
