Investigation of the chemical composition of hair. It is used in studying exposure to toxic chemicals in the environment, in poisoning investigations, in nutritional studies, and in monitoring the course of certain diseases. The sample should be obtained from new-growth hair within 5 cm of the scalp to reduce the chance of contamination of the hair by air pollutants. The technique of hair analysis has not been scientifically validated.
