An acute respiratory illness, characterized by acute noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. It first appeared in the southwestern U.S. in 1993 and is caused by several strains of hantaviruses. The Sin Nombre virus is the most common in the U.S., but other pathogenic strains have been identified throughout the world.
